From Edinburgh to a household name
The Golden Wonder story began in Edinburgh with William Alexander. In the late 1940s, he began frying thin slices of potato using the fryers in his bakery.
The business took its name from the Golden Wonder variety of potato, which Alexander believed produced particularly good crisps.
What began on a relatively small scale grew rapidly. Golden Wonder expanded with factories at Sighthill and Broxburn in Scotland and later developed into one of Britain's major snack manufacturers.
By the 1960s, Golden Wonder had become a major name in British crisps and its colourful packets were becoming familiar across the country.
A flavour that made history
Golden Wonder is closely associated with one of Britain's most famous crisp flavours: Cheese & Onion.
Introduced in the early 1960s, Cheese & Onion became a Golden Wonder classic and helped establish flavoured crisps as a firm favourite with British snack fans.
And yes — Golden Wonder Cheese & Onion still comes in the unmistakable green packet.
More than just crisps
Golden Wonder continued to grow beyond traditional crisps, becoming associated with a much wider range of snacks over the decades.
The company also played a part in another enormous piece of British snack history with the launch of Pot Noodle in 1977 from its site in Crumlin, Wales.
Golden Wonder later went through a number of ownership changes. The brand was acquired by Tayto Group in 2006, ensuring that the familiar Golden Wonder name and flavours continued to appear on shelves across the UK.
The Alexander family
“He only used a certain type of potato and everything was the best quality… it was his baby and he was really proud of it.”
Jennifer Fraser, William Alexander's granddaughter, speaking to BBC News

A wee note from Frank
“Golden Wonder is one of those brands that doesn't need reinventing. Give people the flavours they remember and make sure the cupboard doesn't run empty.”
Being a Scottish business ourselves, there's something particularly nice about stocking a crisp brand whose story began in Edinburgh.
We keep a strong Golden Wonder range because the old favourites still have an incredibly loyal following — and we're always looking out for more flavours to add.
