Golden Wonder Crisps – A True Scottish Original Since 1947

Golden Wonder started life in a small Edinburgh bakery, where a man named William Alexander changed snack history forever. In the late 1940s, he began dropping thin slices of potato into the same fryers he used for doughnuts – and from that came the crisp that would take Britain by storm.
*Historical details adapted from BBC News, article by Angie Brown.
The name came from the Golden Wonder variety of potato – one William believed made the best-tasting crisps. By 1964, Golden Wonder was the largest crisp company in the UK, and in 1962, it launched the UK’s first flavoured crisp: Cheese & Onion. The green packet would become iconic (even if Walkers later tried to flip the colours).
From those humble beginnings, William expanded rapidly – building factories in Sighthill and Broxburn in Scotland, and eventually in England. His son, Norman, even travelled to North America to buy machinery to de-starch potatoes as demand exploded. At its height, Golden Wonder employed over 200 people and operated four major sites.
"He only used a certain type of potato and everything was the best quality… it was his baby and he was really proud of it." – Jennifer Fraser, William’s granddaughter
Though he built a crisp empire, William Alexander was a quiet man. According to his granddaughter, he never actually ate crisps himself — and neither did his son, plagued by stomach ulcers. But what they built fed the nation for decades. William died in 1973, aged 71, leaving behind a family legacy and a household name.
Later on, Golden Wonder expanded into other snacks – from salted peanuts to the invention of Pot Noodle in 1977 at their Welsh site in Crumlin. Though Walkers eventually overtook them in market share, Golden Wonder remains a nostalgic favourite for millions of Brits.
Many of the company's early records were sadly lost in a 1989 fire at the Corby factory. But stories like Jennifer’s keep the brand’s heritage alive – like the memory of being handed a hot polybag of crisps straight off the line at age six, still steaming and salty, “lovely when they’re hot.”

Why are Golden Wonder Cheese & Onion packets green?
